2.1 How to Enter the Arm into the Water: Theory
Once we are able to align the head with the torso through relaxation of the neck muscles, it is time to focus on the arm entry.
The entry of the arm into the water will always create some resistance, but the extent of it depends on how it is executed.

Phelps performs an entry with a relaxed hand and fingers, where the fingertips are the first to touch the water, followed by the knuckles, wrist, forearm, and elbow. To achieve this, he executes the entry as if his arm were sliding down a slide that is halfway submerged.
By entering the arm in this manner, we create the smallest possible hole in the water, allowing us to smoothly slide the rest of the arm through that opening. Once the arm is in, it should follow the slide’s momentum forward, aiming for the lower part of the tube through which the entire body must pass. This way, fewer disturbances and less resistance to progress are generated.
2.2 How to Enter the Arm into the Water: Practice
In this video, we will provide you with detailed guidance on how to achieve entries that create minimal resistance and prevent unnecessary strain. We won’t be fighting against gravity when entering the arm into the water; instead, we’ll use it to facilitate a clean entry, much like when executing a headfirst dive into the water.

In this practical demonstration video on arm entry into the water, you will learn how to make entries without splashing or making noise. Most importantly, you will achieve this without straining your shoulder in the process. Additionally, this technique will aid in maintaining a proper horizontal balance without displacing your head. Once again, knowing how to relax the shoulder muscles is the key to this exercise.
2.3 How to Enter the Arm into the Water: Training Routine
In this sequence of exercises that we will now demonstrate, we will enhance the efficiency of your arm entry into the water by employing points of focus. Remember, first you must master each point of focus individually before combining them to achieve efficient and healthy entries. The transition to actual swimming will be smoother once you have mastered these points of focus.
